Vegetable Price Hike: Due to lack of rain and excessive heat, there has been a tremendous impact on the production of vegetables. If there is no rain within the next five to six days, the prices may increase further. At present, the rate of these vegetables has increased by 30 percent.
As the heat of the day increases, the prices of green vegetables start skyrocketing. Like every year, this time also the prices of vegetables have started increasing in the market. The scorching heat in Kolkata and neighboring districts has also affected the production of vegetables, due to which the prices of vegetables have increased. A vendors association said that the price of common vegetables has increased by 15-30% in the recent week and if there is no rain within the next five to six days, the prices may increase further.
Effect on production of vegetables due to extreme heat
Due to the intense heat and lack of rain, it has had a tremendous impact on the production of vegetables. The supply in the market of the producers in the districts has already decreased.
Citing an example , Dey
said the farmers’ market or ‘haat’ at Gopalnagar near Bangaon in North 24 Parganas district was receiving an average of 100-125 truckloads of parwal per day during this period last year, but Now this number has come down to 45 trucks per day. The situation has worsened in smaller markets as well, Dey said. There are about 50-60 such ‘haats’ in the state.
80 per kg Parwal, bitter gourd prices-
Most vegetables cost more than Rs 50 in local retail markets. The price of gourd varieties is high. The price of ridge gourd (Rs 60-70 per kg), bottle gourd (Rs 30-40/kg), parwal (Rs 80/kg) and bitter gourd (Rs 80/kg) has also increased. Other vegetables like brinjal are being sold at Rs.60 a kg, raw mango at Rs.50 a kg, raw papaya at Rs.40-50 a kg and pumpkin at Rs.40 a kg.
