In response to various errors in Income Tax Return (ITR), the Income Tax Department has sent notices to several people. You cannot take the notice of the Income Tax department lightly. Nowadays online thugs are also cheating you by sending you fake notices. In such a situation, you must check the authenticity of the notice received. Read what is its complete process.

If you have filed Income Tax Return (ITR) for FY23 and the Income Tax Department has sent you a notice, in response to various mistakes identified in the tax return, then you should be on alert.

Engaging in fraudulent activities such as falsely claiming a tax refund by misrepresenting income or plotting losses to reduce taxable income can result in significant penalties.

In the era of online fraud, before paying anything, you should check its authenticity. So today we are telling you how you can check it.

How to check authenticity?

If you need to verify the authenticity of any notice, order or letter issued by the Income Tax authority, you can authenticate it through the e-filing portal. Now we tell you how you can check its authenticity.

1. First of all you have to go to the Income Tax e-filing portal. Thereafter, on the homepage of the department, go to the section labeled “Quick Links” and select the option “Authenticate notice/order issued by ITD”.

2. To verify the notice, order or letter, you enter the PAN, document type, assessment year, issue date and mobile number on the e-filing portal. Or you can also use Document Identification Number (DIN) and mobile number.

If you choose to authenticate using PAN, document type, assessment year, issue date and mobile number, then another option available for authentication would be to use the DIN along with the mobile number. After this you enter DIN and mobile number and proceed further.

3. You will receive an OTP on the phone number, which needs to be verified. If the notice or order has been issued by the Income Tax authority, a success message will be displayed confirming its authenticity, otherwise the system will display a message stating “No record found for the given DIN”.

4. After filling all the required details, you will receive a One-Time Password ( OTP ) which you must enter. Once the OTP is successfully validated, the DIN of the issued notice and the respective date of issue will be displayed.

5. If the notice has not been issued by the Income Tax Department, a message stating “No record found for the given criteria” will be displayed.
