Tomato Price Hike : Tomato prices increased to Rs 120 a kg in the rain! The government has told when the rates will be reduced?

Tomato price rise temporary problem

Rohit Kumar Singh, Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs, said that the rise in the price of tomatoes is a temporary problem. He said, ‘Every year this happens at this time. Actually tomato is a very perishable food product and sudden rain affects its transportation. According to data available with the Department of Consumer Affairs, the average price of tomato at the all-India level on June 27 was Rs 46 per kg.

Maximum price Rs 122 per kg

The maximum price of tomato has also been recorded at Rs 122 per kg. Talking about the four metro cities of the country, the retail price of tomato was Rs 60 per kg in Delhi, Rs 42 per kg in Mumbai, Rs 75 per kg in Kolkata and Rs 67 per kg in Chennai. Although government data says that the price of tomato has been recorded at Rs 122 per kg in Gorakhpur in UP and Bellary in Karnataka.

Tomato rate doubled in a week:

The rate of tomato has also doubled in a week to about Rs 80 per kg at Mother Dairy’s store selling milk and fruits and vegetables in Delhi-NCR. Due to disruption in the supply of tomato due to rains in the major producing areas, its price has shot up. A Mother Dairy spokesperson said, “The tomato crop is currently going through seasonal changes due to the onset of monsoon. Tomato crop has been affected due to rains in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand and its supply has also reduced as compared to the demand.

In the capital Delhi, vegetable vendors are selling tomatoes at the rate of Rs 80-120 per kg at different places. Bablu, a vegetable seller in Paschim Vihar area, said, ‘We were selling tomatoes at Rs 25-30 per kg till June 15. Within a few days, it became Rs 40 per kg and then reached the price of Rs 60 and Rs 80 per kg. According to government data, tomato production is estimated to be 20.62 million tonnes in the crop season 2022-23, compared to 20.69 million tonnes a year ago.
