Prices of Spices: Amid rising prices of pulses in the country, the prices of red chillies, cumin, cloves and dry fruits have increased. Inflation in Pakistan is affecting the markets of spices and dry fruits in India. For the last few days, the prices of dry fruits and spices are skyrocketing in many parts of the country. Especially a tremendous increase is being seen in the prices of spices.

Along with dry fruits from many countries including Afghanistan, America, spices have also become expensive in Delhi’s Khari Baoli market. Earlier, dry fruits and spices used to be available in this market at cheap rates, but the effect of Pakistan crisis and rains has started affecting this market as well.

For the last few days, the prices of spices have started skyrocketing in the Khari Baoli market. The price of cumin has increased the most in this market. Cumin is being sold at the highest price ever. The shopkeepers of Khari Baoli say that the production of cumin has been affected due to the rain. Along with this, cumin is also sent to many countries outside India.

The prices of spices and dry fruits increased in Khari Baoli market-

Naresh Kumar, a businessman who buys spices and dry fruits from Khari Baoli and sells them in other areas of Delhi, says, ‘Never seen such a jump in the prices of cumin in Khari Baoli before. Last year also, cumin used to be available up to Rs. 400 per kg in this season, but now it is available in bulk at Rs. 850 to 900 per kg. Similarly, last year dry chillies used to be mixed in bulk up to Rs 300 per kg, but this time the shopkeepers are not ready to give less than Rs 500.

What do buyers and sellers think?

Let us tell you that Khari Baoli is the biggest market for pulses, spices and dry fruits. There are thousands of dry fruits and spices shops in a line here. There is a buzz of buyers throughout the day regarding wholesale and retail sales. Be it cashew-almonds or raisins and walnuts, new crops of all types of dry fruits keep coming in this market. Ramesh Gupta, who runs a grocery business in Vaishali Sector 4 of Ghaziabad, says, till a few days back, he used to buy cumin from Khari Baoli for Rs.200 a kg.

Now its price has increased from 400 to 600 rupees per kg. Similarly, the rate of almonds has now increased from Rs 600 to Rs 750 per kg. A tremendous increase is also being seen in the prices of dry fruits. The retail prices of dry grapes have gone up from Rs.1000 to Rs.1700. Similarly, figs are available at Rs 2400 per kg in the retail market. Similarly, cloves are getting Rs 800 to 900 per kg in the wholesale market and it is being sold at Rs 1500 to 1600 per kg in the retail market.

What are the reasons for the price hike?

Compared to last year in Khari Baoli, there is a rapid rise in the prices of dry fruits this year. Dates, which were available at Rs 200 per kg, are now being available at Rs 400 per kg. Similarly, figs, which were available at Rs 700 per kg, are now being sold at Rs 1200 per kg. Raisins, which were available at Rs 700 per kg till a few days ago, are now being sold at Rs 900 per kg. Most of the dry fruits in India are imported from abroad. Dry fruits are supplied to India from Afghanistan and Pakistan, but this time there was a flood in Pakistan, due to which the crop has suffered a lot. Due to less arrival, the price of dry fruits has increased in India.

Traders of Delhi-NCR buy goods at wholesale price from Khari Baoli and sell them at retail price in the markets here. In such a situation, the effect that falls on Khari Baoli is felt in Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Gurugram, Sonipat, Panipat as well as in most areas of UP, Rajasthan and Haryana.
