Onion Price Crash: Onion prices are once again seen falling in India. The biggest reason behind this is the unseasonal rains. In the last few days, due to rain and hailstorm in many areas of the country, there has been an atmosphere of uncertainty among the farmers. In such a situation, due to the weather calamity, farmers have been forced to sell onions at many places at much lower prices. In such a situation, onion prices in India have reached their lowest level of 5 years (Onion Price Crashed).
Farmers forced to sell onions at throwaway prices
Maharashtra produces 40 percent of the total onion in the country. In such a situation, onion crops have suffered heavy losses in many places due to rain and hailstorm in March. The quality concern has increased among the farmers and in panic they are selling onions at a much lower price than the actual price.
According to experts, farmers are reaching APMC mandis in large numbers to sell their onions as soon as possible. Because of this, the stock of onions has suddenly increased in the market and the prices of onions have come down drastically. Along with this, if farmers try to store onions of poor quality for four to six months, then they may have to bear the loss of onion prices of Rs 15 per kg. In this way the farmers may get double whammy.
70 percent onions spoiled
According to the report published in Live Mint, every day 24,000 tonnes of onions are being brought by the farmers to the mandis of Nashik. Out of this, 70 percent of the crop has been damaged. It is to be noted that rabi onions are harvested between March to May. It accounts for 65 to 70 percent of the total onion production in India. At present, the price of onions coming in the market is Rs 200 to 300 per quintal. On the other hand, the price of better quality onion is 500 to 600 rupees. In such a situation, farmers have to sell their crops at half the price.
Unseasonal rain ruined the onion crop
Till April this year, Maharashtra has received 308 per cent more rainfall than normal. Because of this the onion crop has been ruined. Due to this, there will be a decrease in onion production in the coming times. Last year in 2022-23, 22.9 metric tonnes of onions were produced in the rabi season. At the same time, this year it is expected that it will increase to 23.5 metric tonnes. But the chances of reduction in production due to rain are less visible, but the shelf life of onions will be reduced by two-three months.
