Nag Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Shravan month. Worshiping snakes on this day ends the fear of snakes and Kaal Sarp Dosh. People perform special rituals on this day.
According to tradition, the fifth day of the Shukla Paksha of the month of Shravan (Sawan) marks the origin of snakes, which is why this day is celebrated as Nag Panchami. In some regions, it is also celebrated during the fifth day of Krishna Paksha. Scriptures say that worshipping on this day removes the fear of snakes and removes the negative effects of time (Kaal Dosha).
This is also considered an auspicious day to get relief from Kaal Sarpa Dosha. On this day, one should respectfully worship the snake deities and chant the following mantra: “Anantham, Vasuki, Shesha, Padmanabham, Chakrabalam, Karkotakam, Takshakam.”
It is believed that people born under Kaal Sarpa Yoga often face major challenges in the first half of life. However, after the age of 48, success and recognition usually follow.
The effect of Kaal Sarpa Yoga varies depending on the position of the twelve zodiac signs, nine planets and twelve houses in one’s birth chart, which is why it is divided into twelve types.
Performing proper rituals can help bring peace, prosperity and relief. Before taking any remedies, it is important to confirm whether Kaal Sarpa Yoga is indeed present in the birth chart.
How to perform rituals?
If you are affected by Kaal Sarpa Yog, you are advised to keep a Naag Panchami fast, perform Rudrabhishek and perform rituals dedicated to the serpent deities. It is said that by worshiping Lord Shiva, a person is freed from the curse of Kaal Sarpa Yog.
Chant “Om Namah Shivaya” with a Rudraksha bead in a Shiva temple. Offer a copper serpent on the Shivling and also worship a pair of serpents made of iron or silver.
Offer offerings based on your capacity- these can include seven types of grains, black sesame seeds, a blue cloth, a coconut or even a horse. Invoke your ancestors (pitras) during the ritual and pray to the serpent deities for their salvation. After this, immerse the puja material and the serpent idol in a river or sea.
If a woman has Kaal Sarpa Dosha in her birth chart, she should walk around a banyan tree (Vata Vriksha) 108 times on the day of Nag Panchami while asking for a wish. It is believed that this will make her wish come true. One should also recite Navnag Stotra on this day.
According to Drik Panchang, “It is believed that any worship offered to snakes reaches the serpent deities. Hence people worship live snakes on that day as representatives of the serpent deities, who are revered and worshipped in Hinduism.” The 12 serpent deities worshipped during Nag Panchami are Ananta, Vasuki, Shesha, Padma, Kambala, Karkotaka, Ashwatar, Dhritarashtra, Shankhpala, Kaliya, Takshaka and Pingla.
