Indian Citizenship : In 3.5 years, more than five and a half lakh Indians made foreign countries their home, left citizenship

Indian Citizenship: The Central Government has informed the Parliament that in the last three years, 4,74,246 Indians have renounced their citizenship and acquired citizenship of other countries and settled there.

Whereas in the current year 2023, till the month of June, a total of 87,026 people have renounced Indian citizenship. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has given this answer in writing to the question asked in the Lok Sabha.

Lok Sabha MP Karti P Chidambaram asked the foreign minister how many Indians have renounced their citizenship in the last three years. Also, which countries have they acquired citizenship of. Is the number of people giving up citizenship the highest in 12 years?

In response to these questions, the Foreign Minister said that 85,256 Indians in 2020, 1,63,256 in 2021 and 2,25,620 in 2022 have renounced their citizenship. While by June 2023 this number is 87,026. S Jaishankar said that in the last two decades, a large number of Indians have been looking for global workplaces.

Many of these people have chosen the option of taking citizenship of other countries due to personal convenience. He said that the government has taken cognizance of this and has made many such efforts around Make in India, so that their talent can be developed in the countries themselves. He said that the government has promoted skills and startups.

The Finance Minister told that the Indian community living abroad is an asset for this country. The government has brought a major change in the way it engages with the Indian community. A successful, affluent and influential Indian community means a lot to India. He said that the approach of the government has been to use the networks of this diaspora to benefit India.

The Foreign Minister told that Indians have acquired citizenship of a total of 130 countries, which include countries like America, UK, Switzerland, Spain, Sweden, Portugal, Israel, Bahamas.
