According to the mythological story, Hiranyakashyap’s son Prahlad was an ardent devotee of the Lord. Father Hiranyakashyap was unhappy with his devotion. Regarding this matter, he made many efforts to remove his son from the devotion of God, but devotee Prahlad could not leave the devotion of the Lord. Hiranyakashipu planned to kill his son. He made Prahlad sit in the lap of his sister Holika and threw him into the fire. But by God’s grace, Holika was burnt to ashes and devotee Prahlad came out safely from the fire, from then onwards the tradition of celebrating Holi festival started.
Himalaya’s daughter Parvati wanted to be married to Lord Shiva but Lord Shiva was engrossed in his penance. Kamadeva came to help Parvati. He fired the arrow of love and Lord Shiva’s penance was broken. Lord Shiva got very angry and opened his third eye. Kamadeva’s body was burnt to ashes in the flame of his anger.
