Holika Dahan Katha

Prahlad’s father Hiranyakashipu was an enemy of Lord Vishnu. He was strongly opposed to his son’s devotion to Lord Vishnu. When Prahlad refused to obey Hiranyakashipu, Hiranyakashipu ordered his sister, the demoness Holika, to kill Prahlad. Holika had a divine shawl gifted by Lord Brahma to protect her from fire.

Holika planned to kill Prahlad by burning him in a huge fire. Holika sat in the fire with Prahlad, but by the infinite grace of Lord Vishnu, the divine shawl protected Prahlad from the fire instead of Holika.

According to folklore, after the fire was lit, Prahlad started chanting the name of Lord Vishnu. When Lord Vishnu saw his beloved devotee in trouble, he ordered a gust of wind to blow the shawl from Holika onto his devotee Prahlad. That is why the demoness Holika was burnt to ashes in the huge fire and due to the grace of Lord Vishnu and the magical shawl, Prahlad did not suffer any harm.
