Where is cheap onion available?
In view of the rising prices of onions, the government is selling cheap onions among the general public . This sale is being done by NCCF . NCCF Regional Manager Yogendra Prasad Singh told NBT Digital that at present onion is being sold at subsidized rates at more than 40 places in Delhi. There, onions are being sold in small trucks at just Rs 25 per kg. At the same time, the price of onion in the retail market has reached Rs 60 to Rs 70 per kg.
Where are the cheap onion trucks parked?
Yogendra Singh told that Delhi’s South Avenue, North Avenue, Majnu Ka Tila, Trinagar, Dwarka Mod, Palam, Khanpur, Kalkaji, Mandi Village, Roshanpura Najafgarh, Punjabi Bagh, Pushp Vihar, Rohini Sector 16 Market, Shastri Nagar, Sultanpur Main.
Small trucks have been deployed at places like Market Road, RK Puram, Dhichaun Kalan Najafgarh, outside Krishi Bhawan, Sarojini Nagar, Delhi Cantt, Dwarka Sector 2, Rangpuri DDA Flat Market, Fatehpuri, Ghonda, Krishnanagar, Harkesh Nagar etc. Apart from this, cheap onions are also being sold at some places in Gurgaon, Faridabad, Noida and Ghaziabad.
Plan to sell cheap onions outside Delhi NCR also
There is a plan by the Central Government to sell cheap onions outside Delhi and NCR also. Under this, sale of onion at Rs 25 per kg has started or is about to start in cities like Rohtak, Kurukshetra, Banaras, Jaipur, Srinagar, Amritsar etc. There is also an arrangement for sale of cheap pulses and some millets on this mini truck.
Why have onion prices increased?
At present, onions of Rabi crop are in the market. It was uprooted from the fields in the month of May itself. There is very little stock left for Rabi crop. Some restrictions have already been imposed on its export.
In such a situation, traders have increased the prices in the markets of Maharashtra to earn additional income. However, the government is removing onion from its stock to control its prices. There is a plan to send about 700 tonnes of onions to Delhi every day from this stock. Even then its prices are not being reduced.
When will the prices soften?
A Central Consumer Affairs official said that its prices will start falling in the next 15 to 20 days. Actually, by then onions will start arriving from areas like Alwar of Rajasthan, Palwal of Haryana, Kaithal etc. After a few days, new onion crop will arrive from Bengaluru also. Then onion prices will start softening.
