Bike taxi ban in Delhi : Supreme Court ruling deals major blow to Ola, Uber and Rapido

The Supreme Court on Monday overturned a Delhi High Court decision that had allowed Rapido and Uber, two bike-taxi aggregators, to continue operating without aggregator licenses up until the final policy had been announced.

The Delhi government has assured the apex court that it would frame guidelines and licensing policies for bike aggregators by the end of July to regulate their operations.
A vacation bench consisting of Justices Aniruddha Bose and Rajesh Bindal has granted the two aggregators the freedom to request an urgent hearing of their plea by the Delhi High Court. The bench has temporarily halted the implementation of the high court’s May 26 order. The counsel representing the Delhi government has informed the bench that the final policy will be officially announced before the end of July.

The Supreme Court was considering two separate petitions filed by the AAP government, which contested the High Court’s May 26 order directing the government not to take any coercive measures against the bike-taxi aggregators until the final policy was released.

Last week, the Supreme Court had asked the Central government to provide a response to both petitions submitted by the Delhi government.
